About the role: The Manager of Planning Services reports to the Director of Community Development and is responsible for the coordination of planning related services for the Department by providing professional advice on the implementation of planning programs and processes, long range planning initiatives, infrastructure planning, and managing the development and implementation of land use policy and regulations. Working in a team-oriented environment, the Manager of Planning Services oversees a team of planners, development officers, and other staff. Key areas of responsibilities include customer service, land use planning policy and by-laws, special planning projects, strategic planning, personnel management, finance and budgeting, and general administration. The Manager of Planning Services will also assist in developing and implementing organizational objectives, goals and vision of the Community Development department. This is a permanent full-time position.

Salary range: Range 11, $99,699- $118,510

Education & experience required:

  • Degree in planning from an accredited university program (Master’s considered an asset)
  • Full member, or eligibility to become a full member, within three months of hire, of the Licensed Professional Planners Association of Nova Scotia
  • Minimum of three to five years of similar experience at the management level strongly preferred, ideally in a municipal setting
  • Experience working with budgets and knowledge of financial practices
  • Knowledge of federal and provincial statutes and municipal by-laws related to the development of planning tools, standards, and regulations
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of planning, land-use, physical design, demographic, environmental, and economic concepts, as these are applied in municipal planning
  • Basic knowledge of the Municipality’s history and geography considered an asset
  • Conditions of employment include a satisfactory criminal record check
