About the role: Under the direct supervision of the Manager of Balefill and Compost Operations , this role performs grounds maintenance functions in support of the solid waste facilities. Responsible for picking up litter/debris from around the various buildings, along ditches and roadways, and around the landfill’s disposal area. Performs site mowing, trimming, and clearing brush from intersections, and assists with minor building maintenance such as painting. This position will be trained on other solid waste operational duties such as directing traffic and sorting incoming loads, operating other mobile equipment, assisting with snow removal onsite, and will become trained to operate a wheel loader for their scheduled Saturday shifts. The role also will be required to dismantle all incoming green carts for recycling, and do green cart deliveries throughout the county a couple days a week from September through April. This is a unionized position with CUPE 3945.
Salary Range: $26.08 per hour. 40 hour work week, Monday to Friday, every 13th Saturday as scheduled
Qualities to succeed in the role:
- Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions required when working around heavy equipment and public.
- Ability to perform physical labour tasks.
- Ability to maintain high productivity and efficiency in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
Education & experience required:
- Valid Nova Scotia driver’s license with a satisfactory driver’s abstract (minimum of Class 5), Class 3 license will be considered an asset.
- Experience in and/or demonstrated ability in operating mowing equipment to include mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, blowers, etc.
- Experience in and/or demonstrated ability in operating a wheel loader or other mobile equipment is considered an asset, otherwise onsite training and certification will be provided.
- Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, relevant to the provisions that apply to this work.
